Junior Red Cross

Junior Red Cross is an opportunity for students to look at the world around them from a different perspective, mainly in a caring and helping role.  Students discover the broad base of the organization as they learn about blood doning, First Aid, disaster relief, contact agencies, transport schemes and so on.

Junior Red Cross begins in Term 2 at Keith Area School each year.  We usually meet one lunchtime per week or part thereof.  I encourage students to take on leadership positions and for the group as a whole to decide upon and organise activities for the year.  it is suitable for Year 3 onwards.

It is an opportunity to interact with groups in the community such as the Keith Red Cross Branch, visit the hospital and spend time with the residents there or join in activities at the Community Health Centre. Students gain knowledge of the principles of Red Cross as an international organization and hear about the founder of Red Cross, Henry Dunant.

Water Watch

Keith Area School was the first school in the South East to participate in Waterwatch activities. Waterwatch is a community programme in which the quality of wetlands or underground water is monitored.

Students take part in six snapshots each year and send their observations of water quality at a local wetland to the Waterwatch coordinator at Mt Gambier. Students measure the salinity, turbidity, pH, temperature and nitrate levels of the water. The diversity of aquatic invertebrates are also monitored as an indication of water quality.
